The Many Lives of Lil Durk

One of the most popular rap songs of the year is “In my life,” A collaboration between Chicago rap veteran Lil Dark and superstar J. Cole’s song and children and chorus. The song is the most successful song of Dirk’s career and includes breakthrough collaborations with Drake, Lil Baby and Morgan Warren over the past three years.

But throughout this era of spotlight, Durk has been something of a cipher, a cult favorite rather than a household name. The way he’s gained new collaborators and listeners while maintaining his creative center is a model for modern rap stardom, where staying true to his core audience was once thought of. It is no longer a limit.

This week’s popcast explores Lil Dark’s early days in the Chicago drill scene, how he reinvented himself after major label enthusiasm for drill waned, and mostly in the shadows. A conversation was held about how he became one of rap’s biggest stars.
