USDC issuer Circle issues warning about hacked executive account

Stablecoin issuer Circle has warned its community about a fake USD Coin (USDC) airdrop on the Twitter account of its chief strategy officer and head of global policy, Dante Disparte.

In a March 22 statement, Circle added that all links to the offer were fraudulent and that scammers had taken over Disparte’s account.CEO Jeremy Allaire backed up company statement.

Hacked accounts used to promote fake USDC rewards

Disparte’s hacked account was used to promote a fake USDC airdrop.

Malicious players linked to phishing websites designed to steal sensitive data or tokens of unsuspecting individuals.

Some of the messages tweeted by the hackers include:

“We are pleased to announce that we are distributing a one-time USDC bonus to all existing holders. This bonus is to thank you for your continued support and trust in the USDC … digital currency. We understand that stability is important for , and we are committed to doing everything in our power to maintain USDC stability.”

It’s unclear at press time whether Disparte has taken control of the account, as some of the hacker’s tweets have been deleted.

Earlier this month, USDC lost its $1 peg after a banking crisis that led to the collapse of crypto-friendly banks such as Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.

Stablecoins have since regained their pegs, but crypto investor confidence in USDC remains low. That supply has fallen about 15% over the past 30 days, according to the company. of crypto slate data.
