Annapurna Interactive Is Developing a Blade Runner Game

During today’s Annapurna Interactive Showcase, the publisher announced the end of the service. just the publisher. The company is developing its first in-house game, Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, based on the Blade Runner series.

We saw a short teaser trailer today, but there aren’t many concrete details about what Blade Runner 2033 will look like. (Surprisingly!) We know that the setting is his 2033, post-Blackout dystopian LA, sandwiched firmly between the original Blade Runner and its sequel, Blade Runner 2049. I don’t know the specifics of the genre or gameplay, but it will probably be. Strong focus on story. Development is led by Chelsea Hash, who previously worked on both Solar Ash and What Remains of Edith Finch.

Speaking to Hush ahead of the news, she said Annapurna was the one who approached Alcon to acquire the rights to Blade Runner, saying the team has a “deep love” for the series. rice field.

“When I found out I had the opportunity to lead a game of Blade Runner, I completely strayed from the often-told flight plan,” Hush says. “I had my hands full working on two projects and putting together designs for a new project, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I watched it every year, and I remember.” I sneaked in to see 2049 while I was shipping a big project. “

Hash said the development team is fairly small, and they’ve been working together on building the tool and the team itself for a little over a year. In addition to Hash, this group includes developers with experience in games such as Hyper Light Drifter, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, We Are OFK, Skylanders, and Below. In addition, some of them have collaborated with artists such as Childish Gambino, Pharrell, Sufyan Stevens, Sophie Tucker on the visual production of his shows and installations live. And Hush says we should expect to see at least some of that DNA in Blade Runner 2033.

“Working with Edith Finch was honestly a life-changing experience for me. I learned so much about telling stories in the unique language of games,” she says. “BR2033 is a very narrative game, so I can draw a lot from what I learned from Edith Finch. has given us an incredible love of leveraging as a gameplay tool, and our desire to bend a wide range of areas as a tool of expression is sure to be reflected in the final game.”

“Blade Runner 2033” is primarily focused on the world of the film, but respects the original novel, Hush said. She also played the original 1997 Blade Runner, and said that her two games share the same setting as well as “some common themes.”

But mostly, Hush said the team focused on “the universe, the timeline and the point of view of the film.” The team explored the production details of the original film, including many edits, for inspiration, she says. “I was very interested in revealing in detail what life was like for people in the world of Blade Runner in 2033, and we wanted to pass as much mythology through those people as we could. I am going to pull it out.”

Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth’s release platform and date remain a mystery for now, but Annapurna promises more details will be revealed soon. Additionally, Alcon is currently working on a live-action series, Blade Runner 2099, for Amazon Prime.
