Blaseball, an Absurdist Cult Favorite, Is Officially Ending

The cult horror fantasy baseball game Blaseball has officially come to an end after a rocky hiatus.

today, Posting on MediumBlasball’s makers, The Game Band, have announced that Blasball did not go ahead with its current iteration, the Coronation Era, and will be closed for good. The Game Band, which also faced layoffs, claimed Blazeball’s termination was due to a lack of financial sustainability.

“We are making the decision to end Blaseball here rather than turn it into something unrecognizable,” the post reads. “Part of this loss is many of our amazing team members. We need to resize our team to give us enough runway to start building something new. lost so many talented people and will miss them terribly.They changed society.The game, literally.”

In the post, The Game Band pledged to support employees affected by the layoffs and also discussed the impact of Blaseball. Released in July 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the work has gained a loyal following and has inspired quite a few fan-made art pieces.

“To those who cheered and cried with us, to those who watched Sans’ death and the passing of time, to those who rebelled against God and death itself, the world as we knew it. For those of you who have been with us through the end and what happens afterward, Blazeball fans.After: Thank you,” the post continues. “It was one of the great joys of our lives to be able to create Blazeball for you all. Like anything else, we will mourn the loss together.”

Blaseball was put on hiatus in 2021 after its lore rapidly expanded, but eventually a black hole swallowed all players and brought the game to a clean slate. The game resumed in his January 2023, but was quickly put on hiatus again less than a month later as the new format received mixed feedback. Blur’s Ball was due to return in the spring.
