Death Stranding Movie in the Works From Kojima Productions and Barbarian’s Hammerstone Studios

Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions partnered with Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovich’s Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a film based on Death Stranding.

As reported by deadline, The film is fully funded by Hammerstone Studios, with Kojima and Lebovici serving as producers on the project. Kojima Productions US and Alan Unger serve as executive producers.

No further official details about the Death Stranding movie have been revealed, but Deadline says it will “introduce new elements and characters to the Death Stranding universe.” There’s no word on who will direct and write the film, but Deadline understands that it’s “currently in development and moving fast.”

In 2021, Kojima Productions will open a division to release movies, television and music, and plans are beginning to take shape.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and we are really looking forward to working with them to bring Death Stranding to the big screen.”

Lebovici said, “I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner on the first film adaptation of the talented and iconic Hideo Kojima.” Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation can be like, given the creative and artistic freedom. This movie will be a genuine “Hideo Kojima” work. “

The news follows the reveal at The Game Awards 2022 that a sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding is in development. We took a closer look at the new games, which featured Léa Seydoux’s Fragile being hunted by an unknown threat, Norman Reedus’ Sam Bridges looking older, and a grown baby.

An initial review of Death Stranding said, “It offers a compelling world of supernatural sci-fi, but its gameplay struggles to carry its weight.”

A review for The Barbarian said it was “one of the wildest horror films in years, from its combination of subgenres to its unapologetic full-throttle approach to exploitation themes.”
