Fable Co-Creator Says He ‘Ripped Off’ Devil May Cry to Create the Xbox RPG’s World

The original Fable could have been completely different before co-creator Dene Carter turned to an unlikely source of inspiration: Devil May Cry.

“If you lose your way, steal,” he said Via Twitter“Rip 100% off another game.”

Of course fable won’t At least not in the way you’re thinking. The 2004 RPG’s themes, ideas, and story are completely different from Devil May Cry.

“How did the world of Fable get so big? [Devil May Cry] And then I realized that the world is like 82 zones,” he explained. “It didn’t look overdone. It repurposed and recontextualized areas. Relatively short, but it worked for a quality game.”

Carter goes on to explain how it helped. Basically, he copied the way his DMC uses these zones to map the world of Albion.

“We literally counted the number of zones, the size of those zones, and the average time spent in those zones, and used that to block the entire world of Albion,” he said. “At the time, we were so out of control that we knew we had to make something ‘big’ (whatever that meant).”

Yes, it seems the Fable developers had a pretty grand vision. Instead, Carter refocused the game’s development with his DMC scope in mind…and a few other inspirations.

“By literally copying the scope of DMC, the interaction density of Silent Hill, and the encounter style of The First Samurai Path, Fable goes from a floppy, undefined endless death march to something you can actually complete *without*. It changed. I worked on 3D games.”

IGN’s Fable review was 9.3/10, stating: you go through The game has a lot of great concepts that aren’t fully realized. While playing, I kept thinking, ‘Why didn’t they do this and that?’ but in the end, he had a lot of fun playing Fable.
