Kingdom Hearts 4 Trying To Find a ‘Good Balance’ For Final Fantasy Characters
One of the main selling points of the Kingdom Hearts game was the weird mashup of Disney and Final Fantasy characters.Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down Game informer We talked about Kingdom Hearts 4 and addressed some questions, including concerns about Final Fantasy characters.
When asked about the relative shortage of Final Fantasy characters across Kingdom Hearts these days, Nomura said:
I don’t think there were so many FINAL FANTASY characters in Kingdom Hearts III. It’s worth clarifying that many fans say Kingdom Hearts is a collaboration between Disney and Final Fantasy characters. But I don’t think it’s a basic concept of Kingdom Hearts. It’s not exactly what Kingdom Hearts is.
When we released our first title, there were only a few original Kingdom Hearts characters. When they were interacting with the really famous and beloved Disney characters, I felt that no one really knew these new characters, so it was still difficult for them to stand in their place.So a lot of FINAL FANTASY characters were involved to help everyone get to know these. Kingdom Hearts original characters are now very much loved and people want to see more of them. In Kingdom Hearts III, there were so many original Kingdom Hearts characters that it was difficult to find room to add Final Fantasy characters. I’m trying to find the right balance for that. I know some fans were worried about it and weren’t very happy and wanted to see more of the FINAL FANTASY characters. That’s what we definitely think. But with the current number of original characters alone, it’s hard to say what the exact balance will be and how it will work in Kingdom Hearts IV. I can’t give a definitive answer to this yet.
This answer seems to imply that he wants to flesh out the original Kingdom Hearts character rather than adding a Final Fantasy character. This answer may disappoint fans who were looking forward to seeing more FINAL FANTASY, as there are so many characters to choose from.
Looking at the various Kingdom Hearts games, there are many characters from more popular FINAL FANTASY games such as FINAL FANTASY VII and X, but no one from FINAL FANTASY games these days. The protagonists of FINAL FANTASY XII Van, FINAL FANTASY XIII Lightning, and even FINAL FANTASY XV Noctis and Crew are nowhere to be found in Kingdom Hearts games.
Rather than riding on the popularity of Disney and FINAL FANTASY characters, Nomura may want to harness the power of the original character to play the game. That said, we can argue that Disney and FINAL FANTASY make Kingdom Hearts.
