Microsoft Exec Says Xbox’s Activision Deal Is Fair Because PlayStation Has Way More Exclusives

Microsoft President and Vice Chairman Brad Smith says Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is fair.

As reported by bloomberg, Smith said at its annual shareholder meeting that Microsoft presents Sony’s dominant position in the market as one of the reasons it should go ahead with its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The company plans to defend itself in court after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it would block the mega deal in early December.

“The FTC case is really based on a market they identified as having two companies and two products: Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox,” said Smith.

“If you look at the global market, Sony has 70% of that market and we have 30%. Is it a case to do, or is it a case to promote competition, instead of a case to protect our biggest competitors from competition?”

Smith added that the PlayStation has 286 dedicated games, while the Xbox has only 59.

The FTC, which announced its intention to block the takeover on Dec. 8, said at the time that Xbox had “gained control of top video game franchises” and, as a result, “denied or undermined its rivals to compete in high-performance gaming consoles and It hurts competition for subscription services.” Access to its popular content. ”

The FTC is not the only government agency to express concern over the deal, as both the European Commission and the UK’s competition and market authorities have launched investigations.
