Midnight Suns Director Reacts to James Gunn’s DCU Games Plan: ‘This Would Have Been a Nightmare’

James Gunn and Peter Safran have some pretty big plans for connecting the DC Universe (DCU), including video games. But at least one developer of his is skeptical of this approach.

Firaxis Games designer Jake Solomon tweeted in response to the news that Gunn and Safran were planning to incorporate the game into the DCU’s overall plan. “And the games are very different. And the pressure this puts on great voice actors in game spaces? Different universes. And that’s how they should/stay.

Solomon co-directed Marvel’s Midnight Sons, which incorporated many stylistic elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but ultimately set it apart.

This approach brought many benefits to the Marvel’s Midnight Suns development team. For example, access to characters such as Venom and more creative freedom in storytelling. In various conversations over the years, many developers have expressed frustration with the harsh restrictions imposed by Star Wars, which counts the game in its official canon.

Either way, the new DCU aims to incorporate the game regardless of what it looks like in the end. Meanwhile, Midnight Sons has been well received, garnering positive word of mouth and strong reviews.

“With Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Firaxis joins the ranks of RPG developers like BioWare, Obsidian, Bethesda, and Larian,” wrote the review. “Its revolutionary turn-based hero combat system takes a little while to get started, but once it’s done, it makes good use of card game mechanics to keep battles fresh over the course of epic-length campaigns.” Evolve with and keep it unpredictable – turning enemies into objects for increased bashing damage is endlessly fun.”

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. For the DCU officially announced earlier this week, you can check out everything announced here.
