Minecraft Doesn’t Have a PS5 Version Because Sony Didn’t Send Microsoft Dev Kits, Phil Spencer Says

Xbox head Phil Spencer has blamed Sony for the lack of a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft. During today’s portion of the Microsoft FTC trial, Spencer argued that Sony was hesitant to give Microsoft access to its PlayStation 5 development kit ahead of its 2020 console launch.

“Sony was reluctant to send us a PlayStation 5 dev kit at the same time they sent it to another developer, which put us at a disadvantage compared to other developers. said Spencer. “I think Sony could have sent the dev kit to Microsoft as easily as they would have sent the dev kit to any other publisher.”

PlayStation players weren’t left out of the Minecraft ecosystem this generation, as Minecraft is playable from the PlayStation 4 version up to the PS5. industry expert He also points out that the Xbox Series X|S doesn’t seem to have its own optimized version of Minecraft, making the two platforms evenly matched.

But the FTC claimed that Microsoft had three years between the PS5 launch and creating a native version of Minecraft for the platform. In response, Spencer said Xbox is looking at ways to “maximize the success of Minecraft.”

Elsewhere, Minecraft Dungeons was also discussed, revealing that the game was once thought to be a potential PC-only title. It’s finally available on all platforms.

The Microsoft FTC trial has already revealed much inside the video game industry that is rarely heard elsewhere. Earlier today, we learned that Starfield almost skipped Xbox entirely ahead of Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. To find out what happened, see our summary of the trial so far.
