MultiVersus Peak Player Count Plummets to Below 1000 Amid Content Drought

MultiVersus made a strong debut in Summer 2022, quickly climbing the most-played charts on Steam and consoles. However, with content drops and sporadic seasonal updates, it’s clear that interest in MultiVersus has waned significantly.

according to a report from video game chronicles, player activity in the PC release of MultiVersus dropped nearly 99% from its strong debut. This current activity is far from an impressive start for the game in July 2022. In July 2022, the player’s activity peaked at 153,000 his users online in the week of launch. These numbers are pulled from the SteamDB online database that tracks Steam game activity and active user counts. His MultiVersus on PC is currently charting with just under 1000 players at the moment, and there hasn’t been much news about the game since his early January last year.

When it launched, MultiVersus quickly became a popular game due to its Smash Bros-style incorporation of various Warner Bros. and WB’s neighboring IPs. It primarily focuses on DC superheroes and villains, Cartoon His Network characters, various Looney His Toons, and even Arya Stark. From Game of Thrones. MultiVersus’ roster is certainly eclectic, and that’s where its charm lies. It’s always fun to watch Batman and Steven Universe brawl, and MultiVersus backs it up with solid combat mechanics.

However, sporadic content drops are likely the cause of the decline in MultiVersus player count. This is a common problem with many live service games, especially heavy hitters like Destiny 2 and Apex Legends.

As Travis Northup wrote in a recent IGN feature, it’s getting harder and harder to stand out in the ever-expanding live service space.

“Almost every developer wants to be the next Fortnite, and that’s what’s driving the wave of GaaS games hitting the market,” he wrote. “…even if you make a great game, you’re still competing for the limited game time of the players who join the live service game. It’s a zero-sum game.”

MultiVersus is on track for more content updates as it follows a second season that added Tom the Cat (from Tom and Jerry). The latest content update came in January 2023 and added a special Chinese New Year event, a Scooby Mansion stage, and general quality of life updates. However, there is no news about Season 3 yet.

In his review for IGN’s MultiVersus, John Carson gave the game a rating of 8/10, stating that it “learns the strengths and weaknesses of an eclectic cast of characters, rewards players for working as part of a team, and raucously He called it a fun and competitive platform fighter.
