When the sequel was first announced in August last year, Blizzard claimed that Overwatch and Overwatch 2 players could play side by side when playing the same game mode.
The original plan allowed Overwatch players to play as new heroes on the new Overwatch 2 map. Game director Jeff Kaplan at the time said it was a “shared multiplayer environment where no one was left behind.” In other words, multiplayer PvP would have been possible with two titles.
Well, Overwatch actually looks like it’s left behind. Overwatch is basically built into Overwatch 2. Overwatch 2 was already planned to retain old legacy content while adding new maps and systems. The fact that Overwatch 2 is free to play means that this should be an easy enough transition, as players don’t have to pay for new games.
However, this change means that Overwatch 2 uses the 5v5 model, so 6v6 Overwatch looks like it’s a thing of the past. In fact, the move from 6v6 to 5v5 may have made the two versions of the game incompatible.
