PlayStation Shows Off Early Look at PS VR2’s UI

Sony has released the first image of the PSVR2 user interface, including what the see-through system and play area customization will look like.

Similar to the Oculus / Meta Quest line of VR headsets, PlayStation VR2 has a “see-through” view that allows you to view the actual environment in black and white. This is useful for using the camera attached to the headset to see where the controller is and to navigate the playspace without removing the headset. See-through views can be activated using the physical “features” button on the hardware itself or through the UI Control Center.

In the Control Center, you can also use the handheld controller to pull out and edit customized playspaces on the floor, similar to how Metaquest handles things. If you get too close to the boundaries you set, the grid walls will appear in the game. Settings are saved between sessions, but you need to draw a new play area to move to a new room.

“Cinematic mode” has also been confirmed, and you will be able to watch non-VR content such as existing games on the “virtual cinema screen”. (With VR, things look much bigger than they really are, so you can create a kind of cinematic experience). This content is displayed in 1920×1080 HDR video format at 24 / 60Hz and 120Hz frame rates, so it’s not as high quality as a nice 4K TV, for example. VR content, on the other hand, is HDR (2000 x 2040 per eye) with a resolution of 4000×2040 at a frame rate of 90Hz / 120Hz.

PS VR2 also features a broadcast mode that, when combined with a PS5 HD camera, can stream video of both what you see on your headset and what you’re actually doing.

Sony states that PSVR2 has more than 20 major launch games. The platforms include Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil Village, and Ghostbusters VR. The headset itself was just announced earlier this year and you can see how it stacks compared to other VR headsets.
