PlayStation Stars Rewards ‘Definitely Not NFTs,’ Sony Says

Sony has made it clear that the new PlayStation Stars loyalty program will not offer NFTs to its members.Talk to Washington postGrace Chen, Vice President of Network Advertising, Loyalty, and Licensed Products, revealed that the “digital collectibles” offered have nothing to do with the controversial non-fungible tokens. ..

“It’s definitely not an NFT. It’s definitely not,” Chen said. “You can’t trade or sell them. It doesn’t leverage blockchain technology and is definitely not an NFT.”

Sony today announced PlayStation Stars as a rewards points program that allows players to earn points with real cash value.

After completing a campaign such as playing a PlayStation game, winning a tournament, or the first person to unlock the Platinum Trophy, players will earn points that can be used in the reward catalog. This includes these new digital collections as well as PSN wallet funds and other PlayStation Store products.

The description provided by Sony is “a digital representation of what PlayStation fans enjoy, figures of their beloved iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, and the history of Sony’s innovation.”

But given Chen’s reaction to this idea, this seems far from the truth at first glance. New collectibles are added on a regular basis, and Sony said some are particularly rare and will be something players should continue to work on.
