Series creator and Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer has said he’s not working on development at this time, so fans hoping for a Psychonauts 3 reveal shouldn’t get their hopes up.
Schaefer told Cresap: YouTube Double Fine is currently in the “backroom” stage and isn’t ready to talk about what they’re working on, but he’s personally not working on a sequel to Psychonauts 2 in 2021.
“I’m not working on Psychonauts 3,” he clarified. “We’re in the ‘Willy Wonka, locked room’ phase, so to speak. But soon we’ll be opening doors and, like Willy Wonka, we can do a lot of harm to a lot of kids.” I have.”
This was done despite what many thought was an obvious Psychonauts 3 teaser ahead of the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase, which Schaefer claimed he hadn’t seen.
Microsoft’s Twitter account shared a tic-tac-toe board with the word “Psycho” written outside the three Xs. Many put this together to make fun of his Psychonauts 3, but the Xbox Game Showcase ended with nothing revealed.
IGN said in their 8/10 review of the second installment: “Although there are some rough edges, Psychonauts 2 pretty much has everything I could have hoped for from this long-awaited sequel.”
