Riot’s League of Legends Fighting Game Will Be Free-to-Play

Riot Games has confirmed today that the upcoming 2D fighting game, currently codenamed Project L, is free to play.

The announcement was made in a video posted on Twitter by executive producer Tom Cannon, promising that the monetization the team ultimately implemented would “respect both your time and your wallet.”

In the same video, Cannon confirms that the team is currently finishing work on the game’s core mechanics, with many of the team already moving on to features like competitive play, social systems, or champion design.

Illaoi was released in League of Legends about seven years ago. She uses an artifact called the Eye of God to rip her soul from her opponent’s body to determine its worth. Project L’s Illaoi is a “strong and charismatic spiritual leader” whose overwhelming physical presence gives her a large hitbox, large and powerful attacks, and slower movements. but also enlists the help of Nagakaboros, the god of tentacles. Her blog has lots of detailed information about her design and gameplay.

Project L is a 2D assist-based fighter with two champions on each team. It was first announced in 2019 and reappeared more frequently last year with gameplay updates, including one more update Canon promised later this year.

Project L is not scheduled to be released this year, but it will probably be released in 2023.
