Sonic 2005 Tech Demo Footage Hints at What Sonic 06 Might Have Been

Released footage from the 2005 Sonic the Hedgehog tech demo shows what the infamous Sonic 06 was.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, commonly known as Sonic 06, became a notorious entry in the franchise, with players criticizing its selection of poor game design, bland character abilities, and technical issues. At the time, they gave the game a 4/10, calling it clearly “a mess” and “one hell of a disappointing game.”

However, the TGS footage painted a different picture of what Sonic 06 could be. Starting with an extended cinematic trailer, it cuts to Sonic’s gameplay as you explore bright and colorful 3D environments, collect rings, and fight enemies.

Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka, who was reportedly arrested for insider trading last year, presented a demo and told people who attended the show that Sonic 06 would mark the 15th anniversary of Sega’s mascot.

Unfortunately, Sonic 06 did not live up to those expectations. In addition to countless gameplay complaints, the game also received criticism for a particularly bizarre part of its story, in which Sonic appeases a human woman, not to mention Sonic 06 being his IGN’s all-time best did not rank in the top 10 of Sonic games.
