Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – Meet the Gen’Dai | IGN First

When the reveal trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released, internet speculation abounded about a very specific element of it. Specifically, for a brief segment around 44 seconds, after a very large, imposing alien in armor looks Cal up and down with a bewildered grin, he asks why the Jedi exist. He orders Cal to remind him of what happened. should have died

Fans were quick to point out that this could be Gendai. This is an intergalactic nomadic race that is largely indestructible and has lived for thousands of years. Those who have seen his Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars series in 2003 are probably the most famous representatives of the Gen’dai race currently in the Star Wars canon. You may be familiar with a character named Durge who is a

Well, let’s end the speculation. Yes it is modern. No, he’s not Dirge. His name is Ravis. To learn more, I spoke with his Respawn cinematic director Dori Arazi and lead his writer Danny Homan to find out who Ravis is and why his presence in The Jedi Survivor is part of the story. I learned about what is important.

What is Gendai?

First, let’s take a closer look at Gendai. As I said earlier, they are a race of galactic nomads that are almost impossible to kill and have lived for thousands of years, but the reason they are galactic nomads is that their peaceful home planet has been around for hundreds of years. Having no place to call home, the surviving Gendai were mainly bounty hunters.

Perhaps their most remarkable thing from a biological standpoint is that their entire body is made up of huge masses of renewable tentacles. It’s not to protect Gendai, but to prevent it from leaking out. Obviously, this has some pretty interesting potential for cool boss fights from a gameplay perspective, but it’s also a very interesting race to explore narratively for Arazi and Homan for a variety of reasons.

In their own minds and their own worlds, they are very chivalrous.

“What is so interesting about modern man, at least in my own opinion, is that they are very chivalrous, in their own minds and in the world,” said Araj. There is a code of conduct that binds them to a specific code of ethics for their actions, which also ties them to their history and what is left of their people. He’s got a long past. He has seen a lot of history. He may be a thousand years old. He has seen empires rise and fall. He’s seen the rise and fall of the Jedi. He has seen the rise of actual empires themselves. So he has a lot of tragic history and a lot of depth that we’re trying to explore.

Homan agreed, adding: As you watch the Republic turn into an Empire and reflect on Cal’s journey and his own experiences, every character he meets offers a new perspective on the Jedi and the Republic.Rayvis has seen it all. And, like any enemy, he knows his enemies’ weaknesses and how to exploit them. ”

There are some interesting parallels between Cal and Rayvis, which Respawn’s team were excited to explore. For one thing, they both share the experience of being part of a population that has been largely wiped out. Cal has conflicts and doubts and tries to find his place, while Lavis is very confident in who he is, what he is and why he does what he does. And the conflict is very sparkly. Both of you can think deeply about who you are, where you are, and what you do. ”

Warriors know warriors, and although they vary greatly in stature, they have mutual respect for their strength.

When I asked if it was accurate to say that Cal and Rayvis were traitors to each other, I was told that in one sense they were right, but in another they weren’t. Regarding their relationship in the game, Homan adds:

Bringing modernity to the forefront

Having never seen the Tartakovsky Clone Wars series, I had little idea who Gen’dai was, other than the Wookieepedia entry. All I knew was that a Google search for “Gen’dai Jedi: Survivor” would bring up tons of YouTube video results, and a fan’s Reddit thread about the idea that Gen’dai was on the front lines of the war. He said he was very excited. The main storyline of Star Wars.

I asked Alazi and Homan what it was like to shine a spotlight on this race so beloved by those who know them. [to my mom] She grew up on Star Wars and it was like this franchise that was so important to her. ”

They have an almost vampire-like sense of time and place.

Homan continues: So interesting. They have an almost vampiric sense of time and place. And I think that’s very important for Jedi survivors because this game takes place in these dark times. So finding a character who is confident in himself and his place in the galaxy, outside of the empire, is kind of a really interesting opportunity. It’s not just because of his spirit, but kind of his… I think his survival spirit. As you know, in the decline of civilizations, the rise of empires, it takes a lot of time to stay true to yourself, but he was able to do it. I think it’s a very cool opportunity. ”

Arazi adds: “Oh, I’m a mighty Jedi. I have a lightsaber. I’ll slash you…” It doesn’t do anything. The dialogue in this galactic violent construct is completely different with this character. ”

Finally, Arazi said of Rayvis and Gen’dai: He doesn’t think he’s bad. He is a chivalric knight in his world. Homan added: And there really is a kind of mystique to it. ”
