Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Confirmed as Live-Service Game, Requires Online Connection

The first gameplay of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was revealed during Sony’s State of Play February livestream, confirming that it will be a live service game focused on single-player and co-op.

As the showcase game, developer Rocksteady Studios provided story details and tons of footage of the actual game. A 15-minute segment gave us a closer look at the overall framework of the game. It’s essentially an open-world action shooter that blends Batman: Arkham Knight with the flow and action of Sunset Overdrive and more.

Playing as one of four members of the Suicide Squad—Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang—a band of supervillains is tasked with stopping Brainiac’s invasion of Metropolis. In the expanded showcase, we find the Squad facing a corrupted Flash. The Flash can quickly gain the upper hand in the squad, as other members of Justice and his League, including Superman, Green his Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Batman, also make an appearance in the trailer.

Arkhamverse is back

The expanded gameplay presented in State of Play gave us the most detailed look at the game yet. Unlike Batman games, gunfights are a major focus of combat in addition to melee attacks. Each character can be decked out with a variety of upgradable weapons incorporating elements and details that reference other heroes and villains from the DC Universe. During further investigation, we also confirmed that previous leaks showing an RPG-style gear system and live service elements were accurate, further confirming that Rocksteady requires an online connection even when playing solo. Playing the game rewards you with loot and various armor for your character of choice. These can be upgraded to increase the villain’s power in the World Zone. This unlocks classic variants of the character, as well as other costumes that reference other heroes.

Suicide Squad will be released on May 26th

First announced in 2020, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an expansion of the ‘Arkhamverse’ developed by Rocksteady. It picks up where Batman Arkham Knight left off, while Marvel’s Avengers tries to succeed where it failed as a superhero-based live-action game.

Notably, Kill the Justice League is the final role of Batman: The Animated Series voice actor Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman through various projects in the 90s and 2000s. died. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is due out on PS5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S on May 26th.
