Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a Brand New 2D Mario, Revealed at Nintendo Direct

Nintendo has announced an all-new 2D Mario platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, due out this October.

Revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct, the game will be available on October 20th. Wonder includes new elephant power-ups, local multiplayer, talking flowers, and playable daisies.

The core mechanic this time around seems to be the new Wonderflower, which allows you to completely change the way the world looks and plays when touched. The ground could start moving, a flock of sheep could appear, Mario could stretch into a much taller version, or you could transform into something else.

The game’s art style is a departure from the New Super Mario Bros visuals that have been consistent across 2D Mario games for the past 18 years. The backgrounds are now more detailed, and the characters themselves have been slightly redesigned.

Other gameplay shown included Mario sliding over rails, swimming through waterfalls, and avoiding Bowser on roller skates. In addition to Mario and Daisy, it was shown that Peach, Luigi, and Kinopio are also playable. I also saw Mario riding Yoshi.

Nintendo calls it the first brand new side-scrolling Mario game in over a decade. His last two traditional 2D Mario games were New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS and New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U. Since then, we’ve seen two of his Mario Makers, Super Mario Run, and a Deluxe Portion of Mario. U.
