Swamp Thing: The DCU Monster’s Origin and History Explained

The giant hero Swamp Thing is coming to the big screen thanks to DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU plans. It seems he knows which section of that title the Swamp Thing fits in…

The character has received cross-media attention in recent years, including appearing on the roster for the 2017 fighting game Injustice 2 and producing a live-action TV series on the DC Universe streaming app. Alas, the show only lasted one season, and the service itself is now gone.

Still, the Swamp Thing has a long and interesting history in DC Comics. Here’s everything you need to know about this character’s roots (pun intended) and the role he plays in his larger DCU.

Swamp Thing was expected to return to the big screen with The Dark Universe, a horror-flavoured DC movie inspired by the comic book series Justice League Dark. It seemed, but it’s clear that James Gunn and Peter Safran have come up with other ways to bring their characters to the big screen. Mangold is said to be in talks to write and direct Warner Bros.’ Swamp Thing.
