The PlayStation Showcase Was Great… For Xbox

We had a lot of exciting announcements at last week’s PlayStation Showcase. A Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, new details on Assassin’s Creed His Mirage, a glimpse of Aran Wake 2’s new killer… but then the obvious flaws that many have pointed out Even he had one. PlayStation exclusives are coming. This is great news for Xbox.

A trailer for another Gran Turismo movie, earphones for PlayStation, and many CGI concepts for new PlayStation exclusives left fans overwhelmed. To make matters worse, some of these CGI concepts just didn’t quite capture what you’d expect from the game as a whole. Sorry FairGame$, what exactly is this game?

There’s always a lot of hype before showcases, and PlayStation usually does a good job of at least trying to meet expectations, but this one seemed a little different. With the PlayStation blog promising “a wealth of new games and new IP coming to PS5 and PS VR2,” the switch from the usual State of Play to a full-blown showcase has returned to E3 territory. It feels like it was meant to be. It’s gone.

There weren’t many PlayStation-exclusive games on display. This is great news for Xbox.

Back in 2021, the much-hyped showcase unveiled the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, Wolverine, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and God of War Ragnarok. It’s a killer line-up, so it’s no surprise that there were fan expectations that we might see another Wolverine tease, or that the much-anticipated Bloodborne 2 announcement might actually happen. What was actually shown was not very useful for most people. Metal Gear Solid Delta was a game some thought was going to be his PlayStation exclusive, and I’m super excited, but it turns out it’s playable on Xbox or PC.

One of the unexpected results of the PlayStation Showcase was the easy win for the Xbox Social team after posting. graphic It includes 12 games from the PlayStation Showcase and will also be available on Xbox. Aside from first-party-developed Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI (purchased exclusively by a third-party), and a few PSVR 2 games, there were very few first-party games to hype as PlayStation fans. . The showcase appealed to Xbox fans as well as PS5 players, but I’m sure Sony hoped that wasn’t the case.

This will put Xbox in the limelight when it airs its own showcase on June 11th. We already know Bethesda’s Starfield will have a dedicated show and Forza Motorsport coming, but if other highly anticipated games are also there, that means Avowed, Hellblade 2, Fable, and more. But it could be an injection In addition to the hype generated by the PlayStation showcase, the excitement for the Xbox has also grown.

Phil Spencer may have already teased that the highly-anticipated Avowed could make an appearance by saying he played “a good build of Avowed” during the Kinda Funny X-Cast show. “I’m very passionate about showcases,” he explained. “We will be releasing new games and stuff that people haven’t seen yet. [and] “We plan to provide updates to some of the things that were on your list,” Spencer said when asked if we could expect updates on Avoided, Perfect Dark, Everwild, Fable, State of Decay 3, and Contraband. commented:

Historically, PlayStation has done things pretty close, but in this case, I think it’s doing it a disservice. There is no clear outlook on what will happen after 2023, and that’s a pretty big deal for some fans. We know there’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine, and we have a Gran Turismo movie coming out, but I don’t think anyone walks away getting overly excited about 2023 and beyond.

This gives Xbox an easy chance to win the Xbox Showcase, which airs on June 11th, if it can capitalize on this opportunity.

Conversely, Xbox has a lot of stuff that’s been in development for years, so you have to imagine there’s a big W in store here. A teaser for, say, Gears 6, his RPG FPS from InXile, a major third-party game coming out on Game Pass day one, or, dare I say it, a first look at Indiana Jones could slow things down further. I have. But let’s not get too excited. Because ultimately, it leads to the kind of disappointment many felt after the PlayStation screening.

Come on Xbox, it’s time for you to shine. Let’s see what we have.
