Xbox Seems to Expect Bungie’s Mysterious IP ‘Matter’ to Release in 2025

Microsoft expects an all-new IP from Destiny and Marathon developer Bungie to be released in 2025.

of Previously confidential Microsoft documents Released as part of the ongoing Xbox FTC trials this week, Microsoft wrote about a new IP in development from the studio.

“As of 2021, [Bungie] has more than doubled its head office space and plans to open a new studio in Amsterdam by 2022 for continued support of Destiny 2 and development of new IP currently scheduled for release in 2025.” Some are written in Microsoft’s documentation.

Elsewhere in this document, Microsoft says that Bungie trademarked the name “Matter” in 2018 and believes it could be Bungie’s next original IP.

Since Xbox was seriously considering acquiring companies like Sega, Bungie, and IO to fill the content gap, this document is full of evaluations from various developers and publishers in the industry. With PlayStation scooping up the Destiny developers in 2022, Bungie is naturally no longer on the list.

Over the last few years, there has been some teasing about Bungie’s mysterious new IP. A 2020 job listing hinted that the new IP would be “comedy” and feature “quirky characters,” but the former Destiny 2 director said Bungie could provide hints about their next project somewhere in-game. He said he hid it.

Bungie has since announced Marathon, a revival of the classic sci-fi series extractive shooter, so some of Bungie’s teasing refers to Marathon and which hints at a new IP yet to be announced. It’s hard to parse out the possibilities.
