After 12 years, Terraria Developers Say Enduring Demand Makes It ‘Hard to Move On’

As Terraria’s next major patch approaches, developer Re-Logic says it’s “difficult to move on and start a new project” thanks to the success and demand generated by the cult game of 2011. clarified.

“Twelve years later, this game is still selling like hot cakes,” Re-Logic head Andrew Spinks reportedly said in a Twitter post from his now-deactivated account. PC gamer. “There is so much demand that it is difficult to move forward.”

Since its release in May 2011, Terraria has undergone an arduous development process to shine on every active gaming platform, from PC and Nintendo Switch to PlayStation Vita, smartphones and even Google Stadia.

During its 12-year existence, Terraria has expanded significantly in scope thanks to numerous patches and free content updates. It is currently one of his best-selling games of all time, with over 44 million copies sold as of May 2022. One of the most played games in Steam historyWe peaked at nearly 490,000 concurrent players in May 2020 and currently have a high approval rating of 97 percent.

But all good things must come to an end, and developer Re-Logic’s long and perhaps heroic display of post-launch support could end with Terraria’s next major update, patch 1.4.5. There seems to be Or maybe not. only time will tell. The (probably) final 1.4.5 update will add Roguelite Metroidvania Dead Cells crossover content to the game, as well as a number of other updates and improvements.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Re-Logic has tried to restrict Terraria’s post-launch updates. In an interview with PC Gamer, Re-Logic’s head of business strategy and marketing Ted Murphy pointed out that the team originally intended to end support for the game in 2015 with patch 1.3. However, the team has too many “cool ideas” and “unfinished business”, so to speak, away from the game.

The 2020 Journey’s End update was a fresh start, but it was also followed by a series of patches. Murphy now believes it’s time to “start working on a second project,” so that the team “may or may not work with the current iteration and technology of Terraria.” You will be able to ‘consider ideas’.

However, Murphy didn’t rule out the possibility of a subsequent update. “We’ve felt that way before, so we never say never. When will Terraria’s final update actually happen? How can we say for sure?” I can’t even imagine.”

In June, Re-Logic revealed that it was working with Paper Fort Games to develop the Terraria board game. The crowdfunded product “expands the world of Terraria by faithfully combining digital game biome exploration, character growth, base building, and epic combat with tabletop mechanics.” Steam store update. No release date has been announced for this project yet, and we accept that it likely won’t start until 2024 at the earliest.
