David Cage Says Star Wars: Eclipse Won’t be a ‘Skin of Detroit,’ Talks Quantic Dreams’ Future

Quantic Dream is hard at work developing Star Wars Eclipse. This is a new adventure game set in Star Wars High: The Republic era (the golden age of the Jedi, hundreds of years before Anakin Skywalker was born). A gorgeous teaser trailer paints a thrilling picture of the game’s setting, but details are still lacking.

In a recent interview with South Korea’s G-Star, director, screenwriter and Quantic Dream founder David Cage said: IGN Japan Star Wars Eclipse is “our studio’s most ambitious project.” He didn’t go into the details of the game, but gave us some new insight into what we can expect.

Among other things, Cage reiterates that Star Wars Eclipse is strikingly different from Detroit: Become Human, which released on PlayStation 4 in 2018 and on PC the following year. In particular, Detroit: Become Human is more anticipatory than sci-fi, imagining a near future where androids are sentient.

“We spent a lot of time imagining the world 10, 15, 20 years from now. What will technology look like? Do you think you’ll be part of it?” explains Cage. “I think Star Wars is a very different setting. You know, it’s very far away. So it’s something different.”

Cage believes Quantic Dream has learned a lot from Detroit: Become Human, is the studio’s “most complete game overall”, and “fulfilled its vision for how to tell the story of where players were 25 years ago.” It’s the best possible implementation,” he said. hero. “But that doesn’t mean Quantic Dream will put everything back together with Star Wars Eclipse.

“Star Wars won’t be the skin of Detroit. The two games will be very different. Of course, we’ll also use what we’ve learned. will be,” says Cage.

First announced in 2021, Star Wars: Eclipse has remained largely a mystery since its impressive initial reveal. Earlier this year, Quantic Dream quelled rumors that it was suffering from delays and development issues, pointing out that it had yet to announce a release date. In a subsequent interview, Quantic Dream’s CEO, Guillaume de Fondaumiere, said that despite being an action-adventure game at heart, Eclipse would retain the basics of Quantic Dream.

“Mutual Respect”

Quantic Dream has been in the news quite a bit since 2018 due to toxic workplace allegations, but Cage has strongly denied the allegations. In August, NetEase announced it was acquiring his Quantic Dream, and the studio has since announced Under The Waves by Parallel Studio to expand its publishing label.

Cage says NetEase will ease the “resource struggle” many studios face, while publishers will have access to “a wealth of technology” that Quantic Dream is interested in, including machine learning and advanced AI. said to provide

Star Wars will not be a Detroit skin. The two games are very different. Of course we also use what we learn, but very different.

Quantic Dream will join many Japanese studios under the NetEase umbrella. Among them is the new studio of Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi. Keiji describes working with new students as a feeling of “mutual respect” and cultural ties between France and Japan.

“I think there is a very strong interest in storytelling in games in Japan as well. I’m really, really proud,” says Cage.

Speaking about the ongoing work on Star Wars: Eclipse, Cage said the initial opportunities came together “very quickly” and that the studio had no specific storyline in mind beforehand.Cage himself is a fan of the franchise. , was about 10 years old when the original movie was released.

“They have become part of our culture, they have become part of our consciousness. Creative ideas that we had, like a few other films, were also part of this film. “And when you have the chance to contribute to a monument of pop culture like this, it’s a dream come true. , just jumped in. This is a very exciting project, and certainly our studio’s most ambitious project.”

In the meantime, Quantic Dream has continued to hide specific details of the project, saying it “has a schedule” and the studio is waiting for the right time to announce something new.

“It’s the first time we’re working on a franchise, but we’re working on it with the same passion as if it were our own franchise. There’s no difference between us. Same passion, Same creative ambitions, same everything…

Star Wars: Eclipse has not revealed a release date or platform, and is not expected to release until 2024 at the earliest. While you wait, check out all the other upcoming Star Wars games currently in development.
