Outriders Worldslayer Review – IGN

Since Outriders was released early last year, I’ve kept the theory that it’s the ultimate fast food game. Losing time for you and your friends makes it so delicious. In that context, if the base game was a Big Mac, the latest expansion pack, Worldslayer, is a KFC sandwich with bread replaced by fried chicken. With a fine-tuned combat sandbox, enhanced build-building options, and a significantly upgraded endgame, Worldslayer improves many of the original strengths, but doubles many of its shortcomings. This includes another weak story, a nasty boss fight, and an overall lack of work to do. As a result, the magical mayhem of the universe evolved in a blink of an eye, but it’s still fun enough to make you feel better about returning to Enoch.

Like the vanilla campaign, the inconsistent story of the World Slayer borders happens in the alien world where you play as a magical soldier called an outrider. The same mysterious anomalies that empowered your character can now destroy the entire planet, and there are new scary women who want to kill everyone, and Yadda Yadda Yadda-now you are all You have to kill thousands of people and animals by name It’s good.

It’s not exactly high art, and I often noticed that the morbid curiosity that kept me chasing me was the only holdout of my group that I didn’t vote for skipping most cutscenes. Meaning that. That said, this story actually answers some of the key questions I had after the main game, and importantly, in the ECA / Rebellion Civil War that was left unsolved in the base campaign. I am dealing with it. It’s a shame that the sci-fi world with all this potential is stalled by bad conversations and vague cutscenes that make you feel like you’re rushing to the beat to minimize the time you spend not killing things. ..

After a short time of about 7 hours, almost unknowingly killing the waves of enemies, you will end the core Worldslayer campaign in a pretty disappointing way. Defeated enemies that you rarely met, made new companions to speak with almost mysterious mysteries, and saved a bland character from premature death, so the Book of Enoch, the equivalent of sunset, is heading towards something that is just as unreadable. You will proceed. The story of the final stage.

The story is comically short, but the battle regains slack.

But while plots aren’t comically enough to get you into action, satisfying combat regains slack in a big way. Whether you’re pulling out an insane DPS as a ninja-like trickster or a group of enemies crushing the Hulk as an unstoppable devastation, turning the entire group of enemies into a bright red Giblets is all the right note. Applies to. Automatic shotguns tear and dismantle people at close range. Submachine guns apply non-stop pressure to enemy waves. The sniper rifle can cover your friends from a distance. It feels great to run and shoot with the crew. A wonderful over-the-top cosmic magic you can use.

That’s all true for the basic Outriders package, but Worldslayer has significantly improved the sandbox with more weapons and armor, and more importantly, Apocalypse items that grant additional mod slots that open up all of the new possibilities. To do. This could give you 50% more ways to get new perks that synergize with builds on every slot in your inventory and allow for some insane stunts. In my trickster build, I was able to equip a full set of moddings that make nightmares against large groups of enemies. Hurting one poor soul meant hurting everyone nearby. In another build, the bad guys were cheerfully powerless by applying freezes to all equipment or increasing damage to frozen enemies.

One big exception to good combat in other respects is that fighting bosses is usually not a good time at all, as was the case in base games. Outriders generally make you feel like a complete villain, but the battle of bosses is a mile-long health bar that you have to shoot for centuries before they finally die. Let you fight the enemy. In the meantime, you’re turning your wheels into spamming and killing additions while you wait for the bad guys to finally die. It lasts very long and makes you feel like a complete sissy in the process-and there’s the classic game problem that your boss has only a few lines of voice screaming at you all the time, it’s really fast and old. Become.

In addition to new weapon and armor options, there are endgame progress systems such as Pax points used in the advanced skill tree where you can choose from 5 new super-powerful perks, and Ascension points that remind you of a slow-burning progress system. I’m using Diablo 3’s Paragon system and the longer I play, the better it can be. These systems not only provide many reasons to continue beyond the playthrough of the first campaign, but also provide some serious game changer capabilities. For example, one outstanding power caused a critical hit on the weapon, making the anomaly power more deadly, but using the anomaly power significantly increased the damage of the weapon. By building around these abilities, your character will feel more powerful than you’ve ever felt in Outriders. This is not an easy task.

Endgame fights are some of the best outriders so far.

These new progression systems offer a great opportunity to do the ultimate testing in World Slayer’s endgame. It focuses on a dungeon exploration activity called the Trials of Tariya Gratal. This rewarding activity is a three-act dungeon, where the aforementioned boss bullet sponge fights at the end of each act, with some small battles along the way. There are also branch paths that provide multiple ways to overcome it and offer some optional encounters that allow specific equipment to work on the target farm. This is a heavenly blessing for anyone who is really trying to shatter this endgame.

The actual content of The Trial is not much different from what you would get with a regular Worldslayer campaign. Defeat, plunder and claim enemy waves along the way, but it’s much more difficult than all other content and can be expanded to your level. Feeling overwhelmed almost unlimitedly. However, if you wanted a different procedural generation dungeon each time you entered, it would be sad to know that the trials are basically the same for all runs and only the selected path leads to different encounters. It’s a bit disappointing in terms of playability, but the good news is that the encounters burned into it are some of the best outriders ever.

My favorite encounter is the second boss battle. It features a floating monster that needs to disable his invincible shield before it can be damaged, rather than a full bullet sponge. Riding additional waves while quickly performing rituals to damage the boss before the boss begins to cast deadly spells is an absolute thrill, and all else while you slowly whittle. I was frustrated that the boss fight was supposed to live for a very long time and bring down their health. Hopefully they will have more such boss battles in the future. Because it looks quite terrible when compared to everything else.

Another interesting part of the post-campaign content is the continuation of the (still bad) story. This was an unexpected but welcome surprise, as many similar games, including the base Outriders, don’t even try to connect the story to the endgame. motion. Unfortunately, without falling into spoilers, the main problem with all this new story content is that the characters play little role. You are not really the main character. As a result, you feel like a bystander of the story that is happening around you. Or, in many cases, you are taking history lessons about what has already happened, which has little or no effect on you. Redo every moment. This all culminates in the final anti-climatic plot points of the late expansion. There, the twist seems to have little to do with anything. It’s great that they’re trying to weave the story into the grind. I hope the story was better than what we got.
