Rollback Netcode Is Coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ

Dragon Ball FighterZ fans finally got their wish granted by collecting the seven Dragon Balls as Bandai Namco announced that Rollback Netcode is coming to the popular fighting game.

clearly After the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals at EVO 2022, producer Tomoko Hiroki shared a message with fans that the long-awaited feature is finally coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Hiroki also confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Dragon Ball FighterZ are in development. If you want to take advantage of the game’s upcoming rollback netcode feature, you’ll need to play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC.

Luckily, Hiroki says Bandai Namco is planning ways for owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions to upgrade once the current-gen release is available. There is no mention of rollback netcode support for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, and no rollback netcode or current-gen release timetable given.

Rollback netcode is critical to the online viability and longevity of fighting games. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, rollback netcode is designed to create a near-lag-free online experience for fighting game players. Games that use delay-based netcode have players have to deal with a significant amount of input lag when playing online. In a fighting game where every frame of gameplay matters, even a small delay can ruin the game’s competitive online scene.

Rollback Netcode makes online play as close as possible to face-to-face competition, making virtual tournaments and events competitive. The Dragon Ball FighterZ community has been asking for a rollback netcode for years. Earlier this year, Bandai Namco Postpones Dragon Ball FighterZ World Championship Finals Due to COVID-19. A game with a rollback netcode could have moved events like this to the internet, but online gameplay wasn’t suited for competitive tournaments, so Dragon Ball FighterZ fans had to wait.

Beyond the massive rollback netcode reveal, Hiroki said there are currently no plans to add fighters or change the balance of the game. In other words, Dragon Ball FighterZ is essentially complete content.
