Starbreeze CEO: Payday TV Series Could Explore the Complex Inner Lives of the Payday Clowns

Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren said of Payday’s potential for a TV series or film, saying it would be a “perfect fit” as it would allow the team to deliver tons of action while exploring the complex lives of Payday’s clowns. I will.”

talk GamesIndustry.Biz, Tobias Sjögren talked about the inspiration behind Payday, collaborations with other film franchises, and how fans have become attached to specific characters through the game’s stories and trailers.

“We’re certainly inspired by movies like Heat. We’ve done IP collaborations for several films, including John Wick, Scarface, Point Break, and Reservoir Dogs,” says Sjögren. “The reason they worked so well is because there’s an element of suspense when you’re playing Payday. There are moments of action, but these characters actually have a deeper storyline. The game’s It has a personality through its story and other stories, and now that the trailer is done, players will have to get to know these guys and people and identify with them in different ways.”

However, Sjögren explains that the game has only scratched the surface of the character’s complete history, so there’s still a lot left to explore. This is why he thinks television really is the perfect place because it can give you the time you need to build this world and the people in it.

“There are a lot of additional hints that you can learn about these characters, their backgrounds, their motivations,” Sjogren said. There’s a story about what they have in. When I’m playing I always see this mask that reminds me of this and it’s a very cool combination of these elements that makes it an IP that’s very well suited for TV formats .”

Sjögren then turns to The Last of Us. It was designed to be as cinematic as possible, almost 1:1 he has the full in-game story migrated to TV. Payday, on the other hand, has more room to play with when it comes to adaptation.

“Now that these gaming IPs are being applied to TV and film, they certainly come from a very different perspective,” said Sjögren. “The Last Of Us is like playing an interactive movie, the TV series is a game. There’s a very strong connection. Payday is on the other end of the spectrum, probably a lot like Halo and more There’s flexibility and holes to fill in. But you definitely already care about these characters built through the game. You’ve built an understanding. There’s a basic foundation there that you can explore. , which makes IPs like Payday very interesting for the TV format.”

Sjögren said the team is excited to finally launch Payday 3 in 2023, and that the team plans to launch a game that is a “mix of licensed IP and our own IP” in 2025 and 2027. We talked about various other topics, including how we expect to launch much more.
