The Super Mario Bros. Movie: All the Secrets and Easters Eggs in the Second Trailer

The second trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie has arrived.

Put on your helmet and find the nearest kart or bike. It’s time to break down all the plot details and detailed references we found in the trailer for the new Super Mario Bros. movie.

Mario enters the arena

The trailer opens with shots of Mario nervously walking into a crowded arena, as the soundtrack references iconic themes from the Super Mario Bros. NES game World 1-1.

When the crowd chants Mario’s name, we’re reminded This famous Super Mario Bros. 3 commercialA large number of Mario fans that can be seen from space have appeared.

mario vs donkey kong

Mario and Donkey Kong are standing on bright red girders. Other details can be seen in this shot, such as the blue ladder, the barrel and tires suspended in the air, and the red platform directly underneath. Emulates the exact level layout found in arcade games.

Cranky Kong cameo

Peach and Cranky Kong are also here, making their first appearance in the trailer.Cranky Kong seems to be presiding over the contest as a ruler or monarch of some kind. Is it the world below?

More Arena Easter Eggs

There are also other mentions of this arena being in Kong’s possession, such as the carved bananas on the stands and an audience filled mostly with many Kongs. It’s not just the DK infrastructure. Mario’s iconic yellow blocks and bricks his blocks are also visible in the background. These blocks aren’t marked with question marks, so Mario probably won’t receive any power-ups in this particular fight.

super smash bros

This movie looks like it will be filled with elements including lots of Mario games. Mario and Donkey Kong running towards each other reminds me of the start of a Super Smash Bros. game. The way Mario jumps into the air and hits Donkey Kong looks like Smash Bra’s forward aerial attack.

Speaking of Donkey Kong, Shigeru Miyamoto points out Donkey Kong’s new design movie trailer direct, stated that this was the first redesign of Donkey Kong since it became a 3D model of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES. He was changed to “give him a more comical personality and design reminiscent of the original character”, which is yet another reference to the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

Bowser and Luigi meet

Jack Black’s Bowser returns in this new scene. We also get a better look at Luigi hanging in the air (presumably by Kamek) when Bowser pushes him for more information about his brother.

Bowser’s Bowser Corps

Bowser isn’t the only one we saw in the last trailer in this cinematic shot flying over Bowser’s army. Red and Green Koopatroopas and Parakoopatroopas, Goombas, Bob-Ombs, Piranha Plants, Shy Guys, potentially Hammer Bros or their larger Sledge Bro counterparts, and bat-like creatures called Swoops. rice field. You can also see some red thorns and a blue-shelled buzzy beetle.

Charlie Day’s Luigi voice

When Bowser pulls on Luigi’s mustache and tortures him for information about Mario, we get to hear Charlie Day’s much more nerve-wracking Mario Bros. performance for the first time.

mario bros plumbing

A few short shots of Mario and Luigi working together as plumbers by day are seen while Luigi speaks. This looks like the opening scene of the movie, or it could be a flashback.

mario 64 cameo

If you go inside Peach’s Castle, you’ll see the same stained glass window from Super Mario 64 behind Peach. This can be seen from the front of his Peach’s Castle in the game.

world map

The toads here are all gathered around a table showing different worlds from the Mario universe. Is it?), and there is a grass world with mountains reminiscent of Yoshi in the lower right. An island on the SNES, and… Bowser’s two lava worlds?

There are a lot of ice world shots in the trailer, but they don’t seem to show up on the map. If you look at this second fiery island of hers on the right, it’s edged with ice. This shot apparently took place after Bowser conquered Penguin’s ice world, and the map reflects the ice world’s destruction.

Other Mushroom Kingdom cameos

Multiple references can be seen in this shot of Peach and Toad walking towards the camera. First, the painting on the wall seems to be the other toads and the castle they’re standing in, but it still reminded me of the magical paintings in Super Mario 64. I’m also wearing a suit from

Toad then takes out a frying pan. This can be used on its own or prepared for when you need peaches.

Mario training course

Outside, Peach seems to be building an obstacle course to train Mario for the difficulties that await. It’s mostly yellow blocks, brick blocks, and pipes, but you’ll also find bullet building cannons, mechanical piranha plants, spike traps, falling platforms, and even the iconic flagpole that marks the end of the course.

We’ll also take a very close look at these spinning circles, which stand in for the usual spinning fire hazards in most 2D Mario games, and bullet buildings when Mario gets stuck.

The Cheap Cheapes

We saw Cheep Cheeps in the original trailer, but we’ll take a closer look at them here. This scene also seems to be a direct nod to how many times Mario crossed bridges while dodging his Cheep Cheeps jumping in his original 2D game.

Tanoki suit

Here we get a quick footage of Mario using the Tanuki suit to gain the ability to fly. Apparently it seems to be flying a fireball towards Peach Castle, and when it approaches the ground, Banzai Building will chase it in the distance.

flower of fire

This is another classic power-up for this Fire Flower Field. Peach demonstrates how to use that power once she gains the ability to change the color of her clothes and wield fireballs, much like Mario can in most games.

Yoshi’s Rampage

It’s like a field, with Yoshi rampaging and colorful! You can even see one of his green Yoshis in the pack. Are all these Yoshis running towards something? Or are you running away from Bowser Castle?

Super Mario Galaxy?

At one point, Peach says, “There’s a huge universe out there with lots of galaxies.” It doesn’t seem like a very subtle reference to the film.

Shortly after, we see Mario and Luigi rolling through this colorful nebula. Luigi is wearing the same bag of tools we saw in the plumber scene, so it’s pretty safe to assume that the pair accidentally stumbled upon a warp pipe while they were at work, and this entire area is a warp pipe. It looks like the inside of a pipe (you can even see these light streams going in and out of other warp pipes in the distance). This is likely due to Mario and Luigi being separated when they move from their world to the Mushroom Kingdom.

You’re right, this is his cart Mario! There are many spin-off Mario games, such as Super Smash Bros. and various Mario Sports titles, but none are as popular as Mario Kart, so it makes sense to see them in this movie.

When Mario lands on Kart, it’s on the iconic Rainbow Road, a track included in all Mario Kart titles. This particular road is wide and straight, and the in-game Rainbow Road course is known to be particularly difficult to drive, and is also the peak of difficulty in Mario Kart, but I’ve never seen it included. is wonderful.

Other Kong cameos

In this final shot of the trailer we can see the other characters riding alongside Mario. can see Cranky Kong. There are other exciting characters we haven’t seen yet. Next to Cranky Kong is what looks like Funky Kong with reflective sunglasses and a bandana. Is it Diddy Kong without the fancy hat? Or is it the more discreet Kiddy Kong introduced in Donkey Kong Country 3?

Even if this isn’t the Diddy Kong in the shot, many official character posters were released along with the release of the trailer, so there’s reason to believe that a character like Diddy could appear in this movie. , you can see the arena stand from the beginning of the trailer, and in the back there’s what I believe to be Cranky Kong, as well as tiny Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. You can see. It also seems to be standing next to Swanky Kong in Donkey Kong 2 and 3. How many Kongs are there in this movie?!

Finally, we get three iconic Mario actions to round out the trailer. You can hear the classic Mario jumping sound from NES games as Mario hops into the cart and starts drifting his turn. Mario then drifts down the road while gaining speed in a manner very similar to Mario Kart games, emitting Mario’s signature “Wahoo!”

I’ve tried my best to find as many details as possible, but this is a very complete trailer, so I may have overlooked something! , let us know in the comments. We’ll be rolling out news about the Mario movie bit by bit as we wait for its April 2023 release, so stay tuned to IGN for all the latest on your favorite plumber in the game.
